No one will be seated during the dumb comedy portion of my blog. After “That’s my Boy”, I probably should avoid this one, but Paul Rudd is so dang funny. I admit… I have seen this one in the past, but I am pretty sure it was on one of those shady streaming sites with questionable legality a few weeks after it came out. I think it had something to do with Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston joining a commune with a bunch of “Earth children”, resulting in various hi-jinks. The fact that I cannot remember anything further such as the plot or any supporting cast does not bode well for my opinion on this.
Anyway, I don’t have a lot of hope for this one, so here is the trailer.
So, this movie is better than I remember, but it definitely won’t be breaking any top-ten lists. I feel like it goes a bit too heavy towards nudity, but it doesn’t really make a play at being a “raunchy” comedy. There is quite a bit of male genitalia in this movie, but its kind of like throw pillows in a college dorm. They really don’t make things better or worse, but they just come off as unnecessary.
This one also leans a bit heavily into jokes on hippie “free love”. Yes, it’s not a normal thing for adults to be a part of. Yes, it would be weird to come into that from the outside world and act appropriately. The joke was fine for the first 2 minutes of Paul Rudd saying awkward things, but they stretch that out for about a 7 minute stretch. Its just a bit overkill.
Jennifer Aniston doesn’t do too badly in this one, but she just kinda does her thing. I wouldn’t classify her as a great actress, but she works as a person in a role who needs to act like Jennifer Aniston. And Paul Rudd, i’d probably have to say the same thing. Even as Ant Man, he isn’t the kind of guy to get lost in a role. All of the characters in this movie, even Alan Alda, are just fitting into the type that they’ve played their entire careers.
So, this is a moderately enjoyable, yet ultimately forgettable movie. It isn’t really good, but it isnt offensively bad either. It is essentially the film equivalent of potato chips; zero substance, but good enough if you are looking for something to waste a few hours on.
