When aliens attacked the planet and destroyed all the major cities (twice), he was there. When a giant sea iguana calling himself Godzilla attacked and destroyed the major landmarks in New York, he was there. When climate change destroyed all the major cities, he was there. And when the Mayan calendar ended and caused the end of the world, HE WAS THERE. Now, the director who filmed the end of the world 5 times before will get to film the world AGAIN… but this time, ITS DIFFERENT.
That’s right, we are talking 2022’s Roland Emmerich classic of Moonfall. I don’t know much about the making of this one, but I really hope covid drastically hampered the production because it needs all the excuses it can get. Here is the trailer…
Honestly, I don’t even want to talk much about this movie. It’s pretty bad. If you want to know the plot, I’d recommend you watch the Honest Trailer because it is vastly easier to follow than the movie itself. But since I decided to watch this stinker the day after another dismal outing (Jurassic World: Dominion), I think this is a good time to talk through why some bad movies get a pass while others have no excuses or sympathy.
You see, it really isn’t fair to compare 2 movies at face value. In this case, I can genuinely say that Moonfall is a worse movie than Dominion. However, I was far less disappointed while watching Moonfall because I had zero expectations for it. Yes, I obviously looked at both the RT score and IMDB score going in, so I knew it wasn’t going to be great… but JW Dominion also had some rock bottom scores, and I shouldve known better there too. However, the difference is that Moonfall was a completely new product, so I at least could approach it with a clear mind. Jurassic World, however, had 5 movies of history, with 4 movies I actually enjoyed.
With Moonfall, I was expecting a 3/10 experience, and it certainly delivered… With JW Dominon, I was expecting at least a 6/10, and it delivered a 4/10. So sure, JW Dominion can be a better film, but I still would enjoyed the experience of Moonfall purely because I came at it with lower expectations.
Also, Emmerich films are all pretty standard when it comes down to it. They all feature a publicly disgraced father with an estranged child, who starts the movie rebellious but over the film they bond. Most of the time, the child’s mother has remarried, and I think in most of the situations the stepfather dies over the course of the film. Giant explosions, dumb action… I’m just now realizing that Emmerich is probably good friends with Michael Bay. None of Emmerich’s movies really stick with you (except Independence Day), but they generally are fun to watch. Moonfall is definitely a weak addition to that filmography, but its at least squarely in the same camp as the rest.
This is going to be a short one today, because i dont have much to say on this one. Moonfall sure isn’t great, but I at least didn’t feel as betrayed as I felt watching Jurassic World Dominion.
